Condition: Unilateral above-knee amputee
Experience: Decades after completing cancer treatment, Robin discovered it wasn’t behind her just yet. The wife, mother, and triathlete sensed something wrong with the leg that had been treated years before. Her oncologist confirmed that she had radiation-induced sarcoma, a result of the treatment that had saved her life as a 17-year-old. To save her life this time, her leg would have to be amputated. A physician friend connected her with The Gait Center. “I drove straight there. David and Joe, who oversees Powell Orthotics & Prosthetics in an adjoining building, met me with open arms. They asked me to come back the next day with my son and husband, saying, ‘We’re now part of your family.’”
Personal interests: Mom, wife, lifelong athlete & triathlete, Director/Co-Founder of The Hawthorne Cancer Resource Center
"When I met David, he asked me what my goals were. I told him that in eight months, I wanted to be running a 10k race. ‘OK, if those are your goals, we’ll work hard to meet them.’ We did."
